Group Treasurer Vacancy

We are an incredibly successful Scout group, likely to be one of the largest in Scotland and possibly the UK, with almost 400 youth members in nine sections and in excess of 70 adult volunteers throughout. As I am sure youíre aware, we are wholly run by volunteers, and this includes our governing trustee body, the Group Executive Committee, which is made up of essential roles including a Group Chairperson, Group Treasurer and Group Secretary. There are additional ex-officio members on top of these.

Our current Group Treasurer has intimated he will be stepping down at our AGM in 2022 having dedicated almost 20 years of outstanding service to the Group and wider Scouting. He has done an incredible job in managing the Groupís sectional finances, as well as keeping the Group strategically focussed and fiscally prudent as a charity, and we are now in the position of having to find his replacement. 

Being responsible to the Group Scout Council, Treasurer responsibilities include:

  • Manage and monitor the financial activities of the Group, its Sections and Executive Committee.
  • Act as Treasurer for the Group Scout Council.
  • Prepare and present financial reports and accounts to the Group Executive Committee.
  • Leading the Group Executive Committee in the creation of budgets and financial planning and monitoring of these.
  • Ensuring financial reports, annual statements of account and supporting documents are maintained accurately in accordance with legal regulations.
  • Ensuring the Group is financially able to function, has appropriate reserves and accounting procedures and controls in place.
  • Prepare Annual Statement of Accounts for independent examination and approval by the Group Executive Committee and presenting these at the Annual General Meeting.
  • Administering the process of Independent Examination of the Annual Statement of Accounts in accordance with Policy, Organisation and Rules (POR).
  • Membership and attendance of any finance working groups or sub-Committees set by the Group Executive Committee.

General Executive Committee responsibilities include:

  • To be a full and active participant in Group Executive Committee meetings and activities.
  • To uphold Group Executive Committee responsibilities as outlined in The Scout Associationís Policy Organisation and Rules (POR).
  • Willingness and eligibility to act as a Charity Trustee for the Group.
  • Contribute to the strategic aims and future development of the Group.
  • An understanding of their own role and the role of others on the Group Executive Committee.
  • A commitment to understanding and forming opinions on the key discussion points and responsibilities of the Group Executive Committee.
  • Willingness to complete various tasks which support the work of the Group Executive Committee and aims of the Group.

Treasurer skills include:

  • Strong organisational skills.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Confidence to operate in a committee setting,
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Able to think creatively and solve problems.
  • Previous experience of financial management or the role of a Charity Treasurer.
  • Able to analyse financial information effectively.
  • Good IT skills.
  • Ability to summarise financial information for different audiences.
  • Willing to speak oneís mind and listen to the views of others.
  • Able to maintain independent and objective judgement.

Appointment requirements: 

  • Must successfully complete the appointment process 
    • Acceptable personal enquiries and acceptance of The Scout Association's policies.
    • It's expected that whilst volunteering for this role you will undertake regulated activity.
